Art Program
Hello and Welcome to the Art Room!
I hope the Art Room is a place where all students in Preschool through Grade Eight have the opportunity to explore their creative side and have fun at the same time!
In support of this, students will engage in various projects on an age appropriate level that gives them an opportunity to express themselves in a unique way.
This will be accomplished by the following:
1.) Students will learn about the seven elements of art – line, shape, color, value, space, form and texture.
2.) Students will discover the seven principles of design – contrast, rhythm, unity, emphasis, pattern, movement and balance.
3.) Students will look at art with a cultural and historical perspective.
4.) Students will learn the correct way to use the tools and media as well as the proper techniques and processes to complete a work of art, (this includes scissors, glue, markers, colored pencils, pastels, chalk, paint, clay, paper mache, etc.).
5.) Students will look at works of art and develop the processes of critical analysis that will allow them to interpret meaning and respond aesthetically.
Each month the students will be introduced to a different artist in our Artist of the Month Program. This gives the students a wonderful opportunity to look at many different art styles and provides an opportunity for exploration of different art forms.
Some students will have the opportunity to visit art museums or art centers throughout the school year that might include the Latrobe Art Center, the Westmoreland Museum of Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art.
We participate in a partnership with the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art that brings an art educator from the museum to our school in the fall. This educator brings art pieces from SAMA to use in her lessons with the students. Each class meets for with the educator during an art class for an age appropriate lesson related to these art pieces. In the spring we host an Artist in Residency program through SAMA that brings an artist to our school for 10 days. During that time the artist works with all students during their art classes. A core group of students works each day with the artist to create an art project that will be displayed in the school.
I work closely with all the classroom teachers so that art can be integrated into the classroom curriculum. It is my hope that all students look forward to their time in art class and discover their creative muse will here.
Creatively,
Mrs. Seremet
