Intermediate Curriculum (Grades 4,5,6)

Fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students transition into departmentalized classes where they receive instruction from separate teachers for science, social studies, mathematics, and language arts.  Homeroom teachers instruct in religion.

  • Religious instruction focuses on Christian morality, prayer, sacraments, and the Old and New Testament.  Social justice, Christian conduct, religioius principles, and a mutual respect for all God's people are emphasized and integrated throughout all subject areas.  In addition, sixth graders study units on family life and human reproduction.  All instruction follows the new 2011 Diocese of Greensburg religion curriculum guidelines.
  • The language arts curriculum is a literature-based program which develps and reinforces reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.  Basic grammar, mechanics, and the application of these concepts are integrated into the program through practical writing assignments, creative writing, oral reports, poetry, novel reading, and research papers.  Library class for Grades 4 and 5 enhances these concepts and promotes a love of reading.
  • Mathematics classes are tailored to meet the various learning styles of children.  Hands-on activities involving manipulatives, self-discovery techniques, real-life applications, cooperative learning groups, and traditional instruction help to reinforce and develop ideas.
  • Science instruction continues to develop the topics of life, physical, and earth sciences.   Following the scientific method of investigation, each student completes a project for the school's annual Science Fair and Invention Convention.  Experiments and research in the school's state-of-the-art science lab enhances and completes the science program.
  • Technology is infused throughout all aspects of the the curriculum.
