Summer Reading List
As we wind down the school year, it is time to think about summer activities. Summer reading is crucial to your child’s success in school. Studies show that kids who don’t read lose ground in the fall. One of the best ways to encourage your children to read is to set an example. Kids who see their parents reading are more likely to read themselves. They’ll understand that literature can be a fun and important part of their summer days. Also, parents who talk with their children about what they’ve read communicates to the child that reading is an important part of life. Parents have the ability to instill a love of reading. In order to succeed, children need to develop their curiosity, sharpen their intellectual skills and gain the ability to communicate effectively. Reading gives your child the ability to understand and deal with the challenges of life. Literature is one of the richest resources our culture has to offer today’s generation of children. Adams Memorial Library (including all branches) provides a fun-filled Summer Reading Program that consists of summer activities as well as reading incentives and prizes. Also, Barnes & Noble Book Stores are hosting a Summer Reading Program. Please take the time to look at the following booklists and plan a trip to the library as a regular part of your summer schedule. It would be impossible to list all the great books available and the following lists are not meant to be comprehensive, but rather to offer a starting point, a solid base upon which you can begin the process. Following the book lists is a list of web sites where additional information can be obtained.
